Got Training?

Popping the lid off a thousand round ammo can of .223 and blasting the hell out of sray beer cans, toasters, abandoned cars... is definitely an important part of anyone's firearms experience.
Shooting pumpkins with a .338 or 12ga shotgun will also bring it's own special kind of rewards to the lives of the responsible gun owner.

Something to level with though is that almost everyone who owns one has somewhere in their agenda the possibility of personal defense.
When the shit hits the fan and you need to use it, do you know what to do?
What if it jams? What if your hands are cold or numb? Know where you're gonna try to hit the bastard? Know if you have the skill or if your equipment has the ability to take care of the problem?

Professional training is worth (by a longshot) more than the face value of the money used to pay for it.
Places like Gunsite, Thunder Ranch, Front Site, Massas Ayoob's Leathal Force Institute, The Firearms Academy of Seattle, there are more, but I list these particular places as the example to follow for comparison.

That NRA handgun course ain't gonna cut it.
It'll get you the card or the hunting license, but don't think knowing how to load the thing and wail on a target is gonna save your ass if things go horribly wrong and you need to stop an attacker to save your life.

I've trained beside FBI, DEA, NRC, army, navy, agencies that weren't allowed to be named, Moms, librarians, cops, champion firearms competitors, hookers, even a couple of hot whities who lived in El Salvador and needed to protect theirsleves from the occasional bad neighbor.
Everyone I've trained with came away from the experience that they'd been lucky so far that they'd either never needed to defend themselves with a firearm, or had found a new understanding of what is or what aint when it comes to dealing with the possibility of a gunfight.

Something else to note is that -everyone- I've ever trained with was left with the gravely grounding sense that a gunfight is the last place in the world they'd ever want to be and would do anything to avoid having to go there.
For what it's worth, those people are likely to be the most prepared and most feared of the millions of possible opponents in a gun battle and in the unthinkable event would also likely be the ones left when the smoke cleared.

On the lighter side of things, after a course at a good training outfit, you're gonna leave knowing exactly what the hell you know about gun handling and will without a doubt be a better shot and much less of a hazard to those around you.
You'll be a better gun handler and shooting for fun or sport, even hunting for that matter, will be much more rewarding.

I've seen certificates for classes at Front Site selling for about $250 lately, from time to time you'll find promotions like that where you can get into a course for a greatly reduced rate (so long as it's your first class, usually), it's worth it to at least look into.

What's your training?
Do you know if you can park a .45 slug in the eye of that bastard who has your daughter by the neck, when you're stressed and tired, in the falling light of dusk?

I do.

I have taught a lot of NRA classes. Most will provide the basic skill level needed to not hurt yourself with a firearm. I advise taking them if you are very new to using firearms.

I agree with what you say there.
And for what it's worth I totally support any kind of proper training for anyone considering the purchace or handling of a firearm.

I maintain though that the structure and content of the NRA classes won't do much to prepare anyone for what comes up around the making of a gunfight.

One of the things that's constantly stressed in the advanced curriculum offered at the places I mentioned is awareness and threat identification. More than anything, these courses stress the importance of staying the hell out of anything that looks like a gunfight in the making.
...and they train specifically to keep awareness up in the event things go to hell and the pistol comes out as a defensive tool.
Rapid malfunction clearing drills, shoot/no shoot drills, rapid reloading, gun handling in the dark -- under pressure -- with our off hand or non dominant eye --
That's what I'm getting at and want to address here. There ain't gonna be no
      'stop or I'll shoot'
crap if it really comes down to it, there won't be time for words at all. And thre'll likely be little time to think about where that safety is or wether or not the gun's cocked. That's what the kind of training I'm talking about here is all about. It's structured to leave the student with a set of skills that are enforced with specific practice and training drills to work with, so when it comes down to the nitty gritty, there's room left in one's mind to know for double damn sure wether or not they need to shoot or not. And how to deal with the choice they make during and after the event.

And right the fuck on to you for getting out and doing your part for the NRA and those who need or want to get the basics set. There's a lot of BS out there and the courses offered by the NRA cut through a lot of bullshit and present the student with a standard language and understanding of basic gun handling and safety.

i am with you. Most of the classes I taught were hunter safety, and basically handgun 101.

Point it that way, pull the trigger, and something comes flying out at a healthy clip. Don't point it at your dog, or your kid. that's the safety, that's magazine, that's the barrel.

I also taught smallbore and air rifle marksmanship to scouts. That was a blast.

Get all of the training you can get. Most of it is fairly reasonable priced, and I feel that it is something you owe to yourself as a gun owner. It's a tool, the more training you get using it, the more competent and comfortable you will be when you need to use it.

        Frontsight has my vote (again).

As a location that is not only an actual community, but full of wonderful intstructors and enough classes to fill your year with enough training to last you a lifetime, it's definitely a notch above the rest.

The classes focus on law, restraint (of yourself), muscle memory (for the one time you hope you never have to use it) and of course all the safety you could want. Then.....even more.

I only wish we'd have bought one of the houses in the developement when we had the first chance......imagine....all your neighbors as paranoid and trained and armed as you are?? Ooooh, ya, and all on the same side....

          hmmm.
I was just going to say 'not enough freaks'
but now that I think of it -- aagh, forget it.

Ah, just you and me baby, we'll buy next door to each other ;)

              Good god, sis-

Every time we get together in the hot tub now as it is --here in the bay area-- we somehow get the attention of the cops.

              Hm.
Might be that we're such an attractive couple of pervs and that the combination of us in a hot broth along with Cherry's pheremones creates a Brut Musk-esque scent that lures them like virile bucks, crushing under the gravity of our combined sexual energy and raw unbridled energy --
              wait.
Cherry was in a bridle that one night wasn't she.
              er...
Anyway, back to the point-- besides themsleves with lust for us, throwing themselves upon their own batons in submission...

              Shit.
              Sounds kinda hot.
              Say, Merci-
Think there's some hot guy in here with a cop outfit we can objectify some kind of scene like this or do we need to take this to some other tribe?
I think it'd be kinda fun to see you standing over some sobbing sweetheart, your hands on your hips and the toe of one of your boots on his forehead while you commanded him to sodomize himself with his baton.
That'd be just way too fucking hot.

              Oh-
Like I was saying, we get into enough trouble when we get together as it is.
We'd turn that place on it's ear.
Think of I.P. and B.A. in tutus, on their hands and knees, facing opposite directions with a glass table top perched on each's hips as the centerpiece serving table for our housewarming party!!!

I think I need to go and get some coffee.
Something's just not right in my head right now...

Hey big brother, stay on topic.......shhhh, go get some coffee....or something!

I'm taking my 5th Ammendment rights on THAT night.

(blinking at the screen all shocked) what the hell just got into you?

Anyway, what ever it was, I'm sure it's nothing taking a few pot-shots at some mice won't cure!
