Anyone following congress on their goings on? The death date of the ban is less than a month away.

Re: Assault Weapons ban
Thu, August 19, 2004 - 6:47 AMGood idea, I will take a look. Its being WAY too quiet for something that big. If we had a dem. in office right now, the only thing you would hear about on CNN would be the ban. Back later with intel. -

Right now, it seems like the biggest danger is that Fiendstein will succeed in attaching a Senate ban renewal to some "must pass" legislation, e.g., a budget bill. Even that might get removed in committee because the House is unlikely to pass it.
Looks good, for now.

Re: Assault Weapons ban
Thu, August 19, 2004 - 9:03 AMActually, I think the Dems learned their lesson back in 2000. Gore wouldnt have lost the presidency if it wasnt for his militant anti-gun rhetoric. Lets hope they learned that taking away people's guns is a hugely unpopular platform. -

Re: Assault Weapons ban
Thu, August 19, 2004 - 9:07 AMCalifornia is, of course, the exception...
Its pretty amazing out here in California. I live in a ritzy neighborhood in Pasadena and every house has both an SUV parked out front and an "armed response" home security plaque sticking out of the well-manicured front lawn. The same people who vote for Diane Feinstein's gun control platform rely upon guns to protect their wealth.
I guess guns are ok as long as you can afford to pay someone else to shoot them for you. -

Thu, August 19, 2004 - 9:49 AMIf it wasn't for this and th cost of houses, I'd still be there.
I still miss Highway 1 between SF and Monterey and motorcycling in Skyline Drive. -

Re: Assault Weapons ban
Thu, August 19, 2004 - 10:14 AMDoes not really matter out here, the Cal regs are far more restrictive anyway. It would be nicer to be living under the rules of the ban out here.

Re: Assault Weapons ban
Thu, August 19, 2004 - 10:16 AMSo much fear.....I'd hate to be that guy but - ok I will be. The boy scout shooting competency badge was a great idea. The whole gun fear mentality is a knowledge based state of mind. Its like hating homosexuals without ever meeting one. The only time guns come up in the media is when crimes are committed, or somebody kills themselves. There is little to no mention of the "heroes" who save themselves and a group of customers in a store from an armed robber, or the superhuman feats of accuracy at the CMP nationals, or how an informed youth took a gun away from an unknowing youth who found it in a trashcan - unloading and securing the firearm because they had firearms safety instruction. The gun fear wants firearms only in the hands of those who are there to protect us. In a dangerous situation seconds count and anyone who has called 911 knows you have hundreds of seconds available before your protection arrives. Right now I get solace from the fact that there are more law abiding citizens who own firearms, than there are criminals with illegal firearms. If only the protectors have firearms, we need to make sure there are more protectors than criminals - not likely.
