Re: shotgun recommendations
Wed, November 9, 2005 - 1:11 PMi am partial to:
mossberg 500 as my recreational pump gun
Ithaca Model 37 as my tactical pump
Remington 11-87 as my recreational auto
Franchi SPAS12 as my tactical auto -
-
Re: shotgun recommendations
Wed, November 9, 2005 - 1:36 PMNice selection, dont see many Ithaca 37's floating around in the bay area dealers.
Im partial to the remington 870, have a former LE one, standard for skeet and one converted to a whippet. For Mossberg I have the 590a1 milspec which is as good as it gets with Mossberg but its a PITA if you want it for home defense and are going to mount a surefire. In terms of automatic shotguns its tough to beat the Benelli's I have one of their tactical versions with a pistol grip as a back up home defense gun ;)
Just depends what you want it for and how much you want to spend -

Re: shotgun recommendations
Wed, November 9, 2005 - 4:28 PMRemington 870, good choice or a mosberg are good reliable choices, and if your getto like me a old double barreld remington from the 50s thats sawed off. -

Re: shotgun recommendations
Wed, November 9, 2005 - 5:12 PMId steer away from a mossy 500, just seen a lot of them have issues but it depends on how many rounds you plan on putting downrange. The 870s are built sturdier and almost impossible to go wrong with imo -

Tell me about the mossberg 500 shotguns that you've held in your hands or seen with your own eyes that had problems.
What were the problems?
Which sub-species of the 500 were each of them, and how had the guns been maintained by thier owners.
curious here...

Re: shotgun recommendations
Thu, November 10, 2005 - 5:11 PMThe 500's that I have seen have generally had extractor issues. They also feel, to me, far more flimsy than either the 590a1 or the Remington 870, granted the 590 is significantly more expensive. The guns were well maintained, most of my buddies tend to be as anal about their guns as I am. The one caveat I will say is that my buddies shot them a lot, took them to courses and practiced a lot. If one was going to shoot one a couple of times a year and keep it as a house gun you would probably be fine but there would always be that doubt in the back of your or at least my head.

Re: shotgun recommendations
Thu, November 10, 2005 - 5:30 PMI have put close to 10,000 shells through mine with no issues. That is a combination of trap loads buckshot and slugs.
Just my experience. I had around 2500 through my 870 when it developed a number of problems, including barrel warpage.
In my mind there are the same thing: a cheap casual plinking tool, one that can get muddy, or spend time in a saddle without worrying about ruining a piece of art. -

Re: shotgun recommendations
Tue, November 15, 2005 - 2:10 AMI have an M1 Super 90 world.guns.ru/shotgun/sh02-e.htm with a straight grip stock... I find it a little easier on the web of my hand with heavy loads. It's replaced my previous bedside gun which is a SPAS 12 world.guns.ru/shotgun/sh14-e.htm. Both are still loaded, just the Benelli sleeps in the bedroom and the SPAS 12 watches over the garage door.
For anyone complaining about the M4's price... the M1s are still available and they're still amazing to shoot.

Re: shotgun recommendations
Wed, November 9, 2005 - 4:36 PMI saved up for one of these: www.benelliusa.com/firearms/m4.tpl I love it!, slugs are a pleasure to shoot out of this one. A while back I pre-ordered a surefire light for this, first it was still being tested in the mid-east, then the first batch went to the marines, then they decided they weren't going to mass produce it. (thats what the shop told me) another option I have is this: www.sidearmor.com/cart/cata...M1014.html
If you like the pump, I'd suggest a remy. -

Re: shotgun recommendations
Thu, November 10, 2005 - 12:14 AMdamn that M4 is amazing -- but $1500, ulp! looks worth it, though -- I'd loooove to get to shoot one. drool, drool... -

Re: shotgun recommendations
Thu, November 10, 2005 - 12:21 AMsay the word young lady, my older Benelli M1 with a pistol grip will give you the flavour of that M4 although if you shoot it you may end up buying one too ;)

Re: shotgun recommendations
Wed, November 9, 2005 - 9:18 PMThe Ruger Gold Label is the sexiest thing I have seen without an asshole. It's a OO SxS 12 ga. and I admit a bit spendy at 2 grand but Ruger has a bullet proof reputation. I wonder if I could get Xtra barrels to saw down to 18 inches.

Re: shotgun recommendations
Thu, November 10, 2005 - 2:48 PMwell most of the current S&Ws are pretty pisspoor compared to the stuff they made in the 50's to 70's so not much loss there. I only buy their older wheelguns when they pop up in the bay area, least my money isnt going to them. -

Re: shotgun recommendations
Fri, January 6, 2006 - 11:27 AMJust depends on what you want to use it for really... I've been extremely happy with my Rem 870 express mag 12 ga and my 20 ga of the same brand.. I use both for clays and just plinking around... I like my winchester super x semi auto for skeet.. i've been really happy with the 870s and they are reasonably priced. I have used Mossburgs in my work, and while alot of people like them since there are lots of parts to modify them with out in the world, I still like the remingtons better. Just my opinion -

Re: shotgun recommendations
Fri, January 6, 2006 - 11:28 AMbenellis are sweet but the price is NOT..... also added that my remingtons I use for hunting and they do well... the 20 ga is actually a youth model with a 21" barrel but several women I know like them because they aren't so heavy..
